Plastic jewelry

Since I am old and don’t have any kids, I was unaware of the Silly Bandz trend until recently. I saw them advertised on a sign at a shopping center last week, and then some friends of ours came to visit with their 11-year-old daughter. In case you are as out-of-the-loop as I was, Silly Bandz look kind of like jelly bracelets, but when you’re not wearing them they form little shapes. Our 11-year-old visitor had Disney princess bandz — Ariel, Tiana (of “The Princess and the Frog”), Jasmine and one I couldn’t identify but was apparently Snow White (duh!).

Now some fashionable celebrities are sporting the bandz, according to Harper’s Bazaar. I like the idea of mixing plastic bracelets with more grown-up clothes and jewelry… especially since you can buy a package of “bandz” for just a few dollars. Of course, it’s probably not surprising that I am in favor of this trend, since I used to wear a Hello Kitty coin purse bracelet and a child-sized ladybug necklace in high school. I also wore red and black jelly bracelets to Georgia football games (Go Dawgs!). What do you think?

  1. The first time I heard about them was from the news a few months back. Apparently, there’s concern about them being too tight on some kids’ wrists, thus, cutting off the circulation. Then, my cousin in Montana had them so I got to see the whole shape thing. They’re cute and unobtrusive enough that you could mix them with jewelry.
