Thor hammer cake

Toby was at boot camp for his 21st birthday and in Afghanistan for his 30th birthday, so when his 40th birthday rolled around, I wanted to do something a little special to mark the occasion, even though we had only just moved to Okinawa. Luckily, because the Marine Corps is so small, some of our best friends from previous duty stations were living here as well! And since Toby’s call sign is Thor, I wanted to do a Thor-themed party, complete with a Thor hammer cake.

I think y’all know that I don’t like to deal with fondant, and since we had only been on the island for about two months and I had gotten rid of most of my baking supplies when we left Bahrain, I didn’t have anything fancy to use to make or decorate the cake. But it turned out to be pretty easy to make this Thor hammer cake, and I think it turned out looking pretty good.

Of course, I couldn’t just have the cake be Thor-themed. Everything else had to have an Asgardian spin to it, too.

Most of the food items were just normal things (like raspberry lemonade from the grocery store, and pasta salad with pesto) that I labeled with a Thor or Avengers name. But I wanted to have a rainbow bridge (made with carrots, celery, and various colors of peppers) and a dress-up table for guests of all ages.

I had this Thor dress from when we went to Disney World before we left for Bahrain, and I got Toby a new Thor shirt for the occasion.

I used this cake recipe with a cup of rainbow sprinkles stirred into the batter, regular buttercream that I dyed gray, and Cocoa Krispies. You can use any kind of cake recipe and any flavor/type of rice cereal, but you will probably need a light-colored frosting so you can get it the right color of gray for your Thor hammer cake.

1 9×13-inch sheet cake (I used this white cake recipe with 1 cup of rainbow sprinkles stirred in at the end)
Frosting, tinted gray
Rice cereal, butter, and marshmallows
Black decorating icing
Large platter or cake board

Bake cake in 9×13 cake pan, then allow to cool. While it’s cooling, go ahead and make rice krispie treats with the cereal, butter and marshmallows, and when it’s cool enough to handle, use your hands to shape it into a long cylinder, about the size of a paper towel tube. Set aside.

Cut the cake in half so that you have two 9 inch by 6.5 inch halves. Spread some of the frosting on one side of one of the halves and place the other half on top. Cutting diagonally, remove the corners from the rectangle (you can eat them or discard them), then arrange the cake on a platter or cake board, leaving enough room for the hammer’s handle.

Frost the entire cake with gray frosting, then use black decorating icing to pipe a design along the two shorter sides (as pictured above). Carefully stick the end of the Rice Krispie handle into the bottom of the cake to make a hammer.

Supplies: Thor hammer (it was a gift, but this one is very similar), paper Avengers masks, Avengers plates (purchased at the Exchange, but these are similar), Avengers cupcake wrappers and toppers, Avengers stickers and temporary tattoos, Avengers erasersViking helmets, eye patch, red cape, blonde wig and beard (from Amazon, but they’re no longer available), felt Thor hat

The Thor T-shirt and Thor dress are both from Hot Topic, but neither is available anymore. You can browse their other Thor merchandise here.
