Cherry blossom afternoon tea

We’re entering the pinkest and most beautiful time of the year (at least in Japan and DC): Cherry blossom season! The cherry blossom trees in DC hit peak bloom this weekend—the second earliest ever. And while there are plenty of cherry blossom afternoon teas to attend in Washington and Japan, there aren’t so many on Oahu. So I decided to make my own cherry blossom afternoon tea at home.

The menu for this cherry blossom afternoon tea is full of cherry- and Japan-themed goodies. I used an assortment of pink floral teacups, along with sakura teapots I bought in Okinawa and Singapore. The table runner is actually a vintage kimono tie (obi) I bought in Okinawa, and I had planned on putting out some fake cherry blossoms I bought online, but couldn’t find them.

My cherry blossom afternoon tea menu

Cherry scones (without nuts, because my daughter doesn’t like them) with cherry jam
Ham and cheese sandwiches
Tuna salad sandwiches – made with this recipe, except I used dried cherries instead of cranberries and I added one diced stalk of celery.
Pink deviled eggs (I used my normal deviled eggs recipe but I put the cooked whites in some beet juice for a few minutes)
Sakura sugar cookies
Matcha-chocolate swirl pound cake
Mini cherry cheesecakes
Chocolate-covered cherries (I got them in the frozen section at Target)
Cherry blossom green tea

Everything was delicious, though I probably would skip the matcha-chocolate pound cake next time. It wasn’t bad, just not as good as everything else.
And while most of my cherry blossom items were bought in stores in Asia, and some of the china was given to me by family members, I found several similar things online.
