I’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby.
In fact, I had never been to any horse race at all (at least not that I can recall) until last month. That’s kind of weird, considering I am married to a man from Kentucky who has been to the Derby several times. But it seems like we are always busy the first weekend of May.
We were also busy on opening day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, sadly, but we did manage to get dressed up and take Toby’s mom to the races on his birthday (yes, bourbon cake and horse racing — a double dose of Kentucky flavor!).
It turns out that the track complex is ENORMOUS, and while it’s just a stone’s throw from the ocean, it’s not nearly as pretty as the tracks in Kentucky (so I hear).
I was going to wear a hat, but I couldn’t find a good one that coordinated with a cute dress. And it turns out that most people were just wearing shorts or jeans to the track — along with comfortable shoes (recommended).
Other than our aching feet, though, we had a great time. It looked like they had tons of activities to keep you busy all day, even if you’re not glued to the track.
And, not only did I get to wear my fun new midi dress, I won $40! Betting on a horse named KettleCorn, obviously.
