Ombre heart cookies

Ombre seems to be everywhere — from hair and nails to jeans and tops. But you don’t have to wear graduated color or dip-dye your own lampshades to get your ombre fix.

I made these cookies a while back for a bridal shower. They were a lot easier than most of the decorated cookies I’ve made in the past, but I think they still look really cute.

For the frosting, I made one batch of royal icing and put a few drops of pink gel food coloring in it, then mixed it all up. I kept some out to use for 1/2 of the cookies (because I put rainbow nonpareils on half of the lightest ones). Then I kept using the same frosting to make the darker colors.

For the rainbow hearts, I put the sprinkles on while the frosting was still wet. I love pink + rainbow!

So, what do you think? Are you into ombre? Over it? Ambivalent?
