Eating (and swimming and shopping) my way around the world

Hey y’all. I’m sorry I’ve been gone so long. I was traveling for work and didn’t have time to write a bunch of posts to go live while I was gone.

Anyway, before I get back to recipe posts about frosting and cookies (yay!), I wanted to do a brief photo recap of the non-work parts of my trip.

On my first stop, I got to have dinner with the fabulous Carmen… who grew up in Iowa, lived next door to me at university in London and now blogs about growing food and flora in her Hawaiian backyard at Green Box Garden.

I also got to wake up to this… which wasn’t too bad.

Then we flew to Singapore, where I got to see my sorority sister Courtney, swim in an awesome pool and partake in a breakfast buffet that was kind of overwhelming in its amazingness. There were American, European, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and other multicultural options, including all manner of pastries, juices and fruits. I definitely under-ate.

That milky tea in the breakfast photo is teh tarik. It was fantastic. I’m going to have to try to figure out how to make it, or at least something similar.

Also spotted in Singapore: Giant meringues and giant crustaceans.

Next was Vietnam… where they brought me a basketful of French pastries to go along with the breakfast buffet, and I had a delicious coriander-pineapple soup with ginger sherbet for dessert with my dinner. (Also added to the list of things I need to make)

There was also a beautiful patisserie there, where I procured a few macarons. And a (normal-sized) meringue. Yum!

There was also some great shopping in Hanoi (when I wasn’t working, of course).

Next, we flew to India, where I didn’t swim in the gorgeous pool but I did do quite a bit of shopping and eating.

I’m not entirely sure what all that breakfast stuff was, but it was spicy and excellent. Because of my work schedule (and a broken computer that made me a slave to the business center), I ended up having to order room service for a late lunch and a super late dinner… but both of those were also great.

Unfortunately, I’m kind of intimidated by Indian recipes, so I’m not sure I’ll be attempting any of those dishes any time soon. Maybe some naan? We’ll see.

So, that’s how I spent the last two weeks-ish. And now I’m sick. Apparently I should have stuck to tea and pastries. Oh well.

How have you been?
